Maison Secondaire
2025
Black-painted fir, timber, and steel
Maison Secondaire is a sculpture that unites old and new building traditions. Stone Age dolmens meet modern summer cottages. The title means ’second home’ – referencing both summer-cottage idyll and our final place of rest after death.
The work is shaped like a Stone Age dolmen cased in wood like a summer cottage. Dolmens were erected to honour the dead and provide a home for them, and several of them can still be seen on the islands of Lolland-Falster. Present-day summer cottages have also become part of the Danish cultural landscape, offering a much-needed break from everyday stress and bustle.
Maison Secondaire unites the dream of a free life in nature with past ideas of eternal life. The work is neither a summer cottage nor an ancient memorial but rather a fusion of the two. It is reminiscent of eighteenth-century garden architecture and recalls the pavilions and artificial ruins – so-called follies – offering strollers a pleasant surprise on their tour of the garden. Maison Secondaire is a sculpture for the future inspired by the past.
The work is constructed and erected in collaboration with CPH Steel.
Acquired with financial support from the New Carlsberg Foundation, Lizzie og Ejler Ruges Kunstfond, and a bequest from Mr Povl Holm. Sponsored by Superwood A/S.
