LA Ring. The seasons

February 3, 2023 - May 29, 2023

Welcome to the LA Ring. The seasons in the spring of 2023. The exhibition is based on author, literary historian and dr.phil. Henrik Wivel's many years of research into the life and work of the artist LA Ring (1854-1933).

LA Ring regarded nature as reality and symbol. The exhibition therefore presents both Ring's sober depictions of the passage of the seasons - growth, flowering, maturation and decay - and his understanding of nature as an allegory of human life: spring as childhood and youth, summer as life's translucent and clarified center, autumn as age-related contemplation and winter as the last freezing throttle of old age. Ring stated in an interview late in life: "Without Nature, I can not imagine a Future for the Art of Painting at all", and his overall production illustrates this statement: Virtually all of Ring's images are created in harmony with nature. This applies to the outer, but also the inner.

Ring's dependence on painting in nature and his ability to withstand the changing Danish weather means that Ring if anyone is the painter of the seasons. Therefore, the exhibition is naturally based on the four seasons and shows approximately 65 works from public and private collections in Denmark and abroad, including several significant main works in Nordic art history. The vast majority are paintings, but there are also a few examples of Ring's work with ceramics.

The exhibition takes place in collaboration with Ribe Art Museum and Øregaard Museum. It is accompanied by activities and a richly illustrated catalog with contributions by Henrik Wivel, art historian Annette Rosenvold Hvidt and literary historian Lars Handesten.
